Do you own a radio or stereo? That may seem like an odd question but today, with the advent of MP3 players and the ability to hook them up to speakers and program your own play lists and control what you hear, fewer and fewer people are actually purchasing radios and stereos. As a matter of fact, it may not be surprising when one day every radio can be considered an antique radio! Since their use is becoming so obsolete, someone may very well be wondering why anyone would be so fascinated with any antique radio and why they can be considered so valuable.
There are a few reasons for this and someone interested in buying or selling any type of antique radio would do well to consider these reasons. After all, if you’re interested in the world of antiques because you want to actually make some money, you need to learn to think like a buyer and understand what they’re looking for, and why they’re looking for it.
Keep in mind that very often there is just no explaining why something fascinates someone. Why does this person keep a collection of antique radios whereas this other person loves miniatures and dollhouses? Some people love the city, some love the country, and you can’t always find rhyme or reason for it.
But for others there is a reason why they may love an antique radio. Perhaps a particular brand or model reminds them of a certain time during their childhood or years gone by. They may remember as a kid curling up with the family in front of the radio, before there was television, and listening to weekly serials or certain programs. There may be a type of antique radio that reminds them of when they were in college or first married, and times may have seemed simpler back then. Or they may remember a certain brand or model they were listening to when they heard some life-changing news or announcement, such as when President Kennedy was shot. To these people, a brand of antique radio has personal meaning to them.
But for others, having a collection of antique radios can actually tell a story of history and the development of technology as we know it. When they were first invented, radios were as large as today’s televisions and only received a few stations. Their knobs were huge and worked only manually. As time went on, the technology behind them was improved upon and they become smaller, but typically many an antique radio was still crafted in a way to make them look very decorative. A collector with a large amount of these can actually demonstrate how technology developed over time, pointing out the differences between decades. These may have a personal significance for him or her, but can also be valuable to those who want to demonstrate just how technology changes over the years. To them, an antique radio is part of history.

Do you have a map in your car’s glove box? Or have you ever gone on vacation and were sure to buy a map before you headed out? A map today typically serves just one purpose and that’s to tell us how to get to where we’re going. When you look at antique maps you may notice that this purpose cannot be served, as many of them don’t even show the world as we know it to be today! How can you find your way to California if you’re working off a map that doesn’t go any further west than the Mississippi River? Or how can you find your way to a certain nation in Eastern Europe if that nation doesn’t even exist anymore? Considering the fact that many antique maps are missing complete chunks of information when it comes to certain areas of the world, we may ask just what is it about them that makes them so valuable?
From a practical point of view it is true that antique maps might not serve much of a purpose today. Many people don’t even look at modern-day maps as they often rely on their car’s global positioning system or will simply get directions from the internet. But to a collector or a history buff, antique maps are priceless connections to our past. They may also celebrate certain heritages or cultures that may not even be around today. What do we mean by this?
Consider antique maps of the United States. To many collectors, when they look at maps that show the North American continent before the Puritans settled they appreciate how the Native American nations really lived and existed. It can drive home the point of what a populous group of peoples they were at that time. antique maps can also tell a story about political upheavals and circumstances more so than history books. For example, those older maps of Eastern Europe that contain nations that are no longer in existence today really show how such a large part of the world’s landscape can change through politics and government action. After all, those nations didn’t disappear because they sank into the ocean! They’re gone, and new nations have formed in their place, because of the political actions of the governments around them. Reading about these things happening is one thing, but seeing how antique maps have had to be changed and updated can really illustrate the point like nothing else.
antique maps are often used by collectors as works of art. They are usually framed and hung in an honored position in the home. They can be considered as part of any person’s heritage or can tell a story about how the world is constantly changing and evolving. They are usually loved by historians and those interested in world culture. So while you may not have any purpose in keeping one in your glove box today, antique maps are actually very valuable to those who do appreciate them.

The bad news on the financial front is that the U.S. dollar is dropping drastically and other markets are suffering just as much. The good news about this is that gold and other precious metals are gaining in value as a hedge against this type of inflation, which means that today there’s quite a market for antique jewelry as more and more see these pieces as an investment rather than just a one-time purchase.
There are a few interesting facts about buying and selling antique jewelry that you’ll want to make note of it. One is that it’s true that gold’s value is intrinsic, meaning that no matter what form it takes it’s still valuable. You can melt it, pounds it into bars, or form it into earrings and the basic value is still the same; a few ounces of fourteen-carat gold is going to be priced the same in whatever form it is. However, antique jewelry is more valuable than just the amount of gold it’s made with, since the workmanship and crafting of its form and design is part of what makes it a work of art rather than just a lump of metal.
There are certain styles and forms of antique jewelry that are usually more valuable than others. For instance, art deco designs from the early 1900′s are a popular brand for modern buyers as many women today appreciate the clean lines. Designs with a Victorian decoration are usually busier with more detail and decoration and are appreciated for their intricate embellishments.
There is more to antique jewelry than just the crafting of the metal itself. The gemstones that are used in each piece are also something that increases its value and there are some stones that are very rare and that are specific to certain time periods that you should also be on the lookout for. Cameos, agates, and other such additions also add to a piece’s value and appeal to a variety of buyers.
Some catalogs from over a hundred years ago are still in existence and you can see from their photos and descriptions just what types of pieces were popular during that time period. A Sears catalog from 1897 show many pieces of what would now be antique jewelry including a detailed starburst brooch inset with pearls, wedding bands with detailed engravings, and of course men’s pocket watches.
These types of pieces of antique jewelry are not just purchases to have and to wear but are real investments that may stand the test of time. Gold, precious metals, and gemstones have always seemed to stand the test of time when it comes to their value. While no one can really give you absolute financial and investment advice and nothing is certain when it comes to purchases, these types of antique jewelry pieces can be worth investigating. If nothing else you can always wear your investment on your collar, around your neck, or someplace else you’ll enjoy!

Buying and selling antique furniture is a fun and interesting adventure, whether it’s just a part-time hobby or a full-time pursuit. Learning about the different periods of time and the styles that were popular then, the different cultures and what they appreciated by way of furniture, and how to spot a true piece of antique furniture versus a reproduction or fake can be a very absorbing adventure. However there is one mistake that many newcomers to the world of antique furniture seem to make again and again and it’s something that not only devalues their pieces, it can actually make it worthless. What is that? It’s trying to fix imperfections and damage on their own. Why does it affect the value of the furniture this way?
One thing to remember about antique furniture is that the material from which it’s made is not the only thing that makes it special and unique. The nails, glues, and other adhesive and materials were also very unique for whatever time period the furniture is from. For instance, many decades ago nails were handmade of iron; today they are mass produced in a factory and made of usually a mixture of alloys. The iron from these old nails would often discolor the wood around it; while some may see this as a defect it’s actually part of what gives antique furniture its charm. However, to try to refasten any loose boards or parts using nails of today will just ruin that part of the furniture. Those who want to purchase antique furniture want all the parts of it to be original and unique; using today’s nails or other materials will ruin it in their eyes. The same can be said of glues and adhesives – the materials they used years ago to create wood glue is far different from the ingredients in glue today.
Attempting to fill in any cracks on wood furniture or sew up any seams on cloth furniture can be disastrous if done by someone not familiar with how to do this properly. Just taking a needle and thread to the coverings of your antique furniture may very well close up a rip or tear but it will probably also be noticeable and considered a defect by buyers.
So how do you actually repair antique furniture? Definitely take it to someone that is an expert in making these types of repairs, whether it’s wood or cloth or porcelain or any other material. Never try to do it yourself. And, ask yourself if it’s something that really needs repairing in the first place. While rips in fabric may be unsightly, most little dents and dings in wooden furniture and smudges on porcelain are part of what gives antique furniture its charm. Some buyers truly appreciate those small so-called defects. So rather than actually try to repair every little thing you see as being wrong with your pieces, remember that antiques aren’t supposed to “look like new!”

If you’re ready to “pop the question,” or are someone to whom the question has already been popped, then congratulations! Of course the event just isn’t complete without a beautiful ring to symbolize the upcoming nuptials, and so you as a groom-to-be or the both of you as a couple may be on the hunt for antique engagement rings. Before you plunk down your money at the counter, no matter how beautiful the ring, there are some things to keep in mind when searching.
For one thing, antique engagement rings are just like any other type of antique – there are the originals and then there are reproductions. You need to decide exactly what you’re looking for and why before you even begin shopping. If you are truly looking for only genuine, original antique engagement rings then you’ll need to be sure that any advertisements you see for those rings state that specifically. There are many perfectly fine reproductions or designs that are based on certain popular styles of decades past, and if all you’re looking for is a certain style, then there’s nothing wrong with that. But when shopping for antique engagement rings in particular you want to be sure you’re getting the real deal. Look for the word reproduction or replica very carefully in the advertisements and paperwork for the ring.
It’s very important to only shop with reputable dealers when looking at antique engagement rings. Most people today have only a cursory knowledge of diamonds, precious metals, and other such aspects of the jewelry business so of course it’s easy to be taken in by someone that promises that a diamond or gemstone is of a particular quality. Reputable dealers know that they could actually be sued for presenting a diamond or other such piece of jewelry as being something that it’s not, whereas smaller dealers will perhaps take the risk that their buyers will never know better.
This isn’t to say that only stores you see in a mall will be selling genuine antique engagement rings. Many dealers that go to auctions and estate sales work in smaller shops and their merchandise is perfectly fine. Just do some research about them first to see if there have been any complaints about their merchandise before you buy.
antique engagement rings can be more than just a beautiful gift for your fiancée, they can also be an investment as well. Typically these rings appreciate over time, as people have a special appreciation for the handcrafted jewelry that you just can’t typically find today. Many people are surprised to find out how much their antique jewelry is actually worth especially as the years continue to go by. However, be sure that you’re looking at antique engagement rings with your fiancée in mind as well; it doesn’t matter how valuable the ring is or will be to someone else sometime down the road if she actually hates the style of it now!

To the person that isn’t familiar with their history or details, collecting antique dolls may seem like an odd hobby. Many of the items that would be in a collection such as this would be too delicate to play with and many need to be taken care of as carefully as a fine piece of china, so why invest all that money and effort into collecting them in the first place? But as with so many other types of antiques and items one might collect, antique dolls are worth more to the collector than just their amusement factor. There are many details that go into creating dolls and these details are what make them so valuable.
Typically dolls and toys are made to reflect the thinking, values, and lifestyle of the current culture. Today’s toys of course revolve around video games, MP3 players, and other high-tech systems. Even dolls have computer chips in them so that they can talk, walk, and do so much more. When investigating antique dolls we can see how the makeup of the dolls, the clothing, and every little detail reflect the time period of what it was made. Early Americana rag dolls were made very simply with simple materials and without a lot of details; this is because people at that time did not have a lot of money for fancy items for dolls and toys. However porcelain dolls of the Victorian era were usually painstakingly hand-painted with beautifully intricate clothes and features. When you study these details of antique dolls you see that you’re really getting a history lesson more than anything else.
It’s important to remember also that not all antique dolls are going to be valuable. It’s easy for them to be marred or even ruined by stains on the fabric, chips in the porcelain face, and other such imperfections. Sometimes a professional restorer can fix these types of flaws but it’s important to bring your antique dolls to a professional and not try to do the repairs yourself. Sewing up rips and tears or trying to touch up a painted porcelain face can devalue your items and even make them worthless.
It’s typically the details of antique dolls that affect their value more than anything. For instance, some bisque dolls are painted with closed mouths whereas others have open mouths; believe it or not, the closed mouth dolls are much more valuable than the other types. Of course original accessories and elements are also part of the value of antique dolls; some replacement parts are acceptable whereas poor-quality reproductions are not.
antique dolls can be very valuable to many collectors for reasons other than how cute they look or whether or not they can be played with. They really tell a story about the time period from which they were created and are real works of art to many. Is it any wonder then that there’s such a big market for them in today’s antique business?
