Don’t Ignore Estate Sales for Great Antiques!

Many people today are suddenly realizing how exciting and profitable it can be to buy and sell antiques.  No doubt the many television shows that have appraisers looking over items from everyday people and telling them the value, which is often quite a bit higher than they ever expected, have opened up this industry for many who never before appreciated it.  For those who are interested in the exciting world of antiques, the big question of where to get those fabulous items is one that they need to address – after all, auctions are for selling antiques for as much as possible, not for buying them cheaply.

When it comes to estate sales as a source for new-to-the-market antiques, many people have incorrect assumptions about these events and often assume that there will be nothing there for them, or that they’re just not worth the time and effort.  In reality estate sales are a great place to find antiques and to get them at a bargain price.

One of the misconceptions about estate sales that many people have is that the company coordinating the sale will take first dibs on all the best antiques there are.  This really doesn’t happen; these companies are interested in selling items, not in acquiring more.  Most have a contract with the estate owners or heirs stating that they take none of the items.  As a matter of fact, some actually bring in additional antiques from other sales or estates, giving you even more options from which to choose!

Many also assume that the antiques they will find at estate sales are going to be too expensive for them.  It’s true that estate sales are typically more expensive than garage sales or yard sales, but remember that the owners of the estate are having the sale with the express purpose of getting rid of things.  They won’t do that if they overprice all their items.  Also, the company handling the sale of all these antiques will have an idea of a fair price for them and how much is too much.  He or she knows that it’s usually just average buyers like yourself that frequent these things so they know better than to try to get top dollar for them.

Estate sales are typically one of the best places to go for antiques.  What is also fun and interesting about them is that you never really know what you’re going to get; while they usually let you see the items before the actual sale, these items could include artwork, jewelry, furniture, and a wealth of other antiques of every sort.  Many who owned these items really had no idea the value of them.  If nothing else they’re a fun and interesting way of getting new items for yourself or your business.  So if you’re serious about the business of antiques and have been hesitant about joining in any of those estate sales you see advertised every weekend, it’s time to give them a try!
